China-Taiwan Faceoff: As US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrapped up her controversial tour of Taiwan, emotions ran high in China. The overall public sentiment is that of anger and disappointment, while the discourse gaining ground is that China cannot back down. If it does, it will embolden the US side to further up the ante in the Taiwan Strait and in all probability, the US vice-president will be the next in line to visit the island, which China claims as its renegade province. This, the Chinese side believes, will cause a “domino effect" across the world and more and more western countries will follow suit and trample China’s red lines with respect to Taiwan. #nancypelosi #taiwan #china #military Subscribe to India Today for NEW VIDEOS EVERY DAY and make sure to enable Push Notifications so you'll never miss a new video. For more: 🤍 As the world's most populous nation, China has 1.4 billion mouths to feed. The constant question is: How will China ensure enough food for everyone? After the pandemic and natural disasters threatened global food supplies, China is working on better resiliency and self-sufficiency. China has kept food security for 17 consecutive years with its annual grain output staying above 650 million tonnes for the past six years. But with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which together contribute about 29 percent to global wheat exports, what's the impact on China's food security? And could inflation worsen tight food supplies? Tian Wei posed all these questions to Professor Wen Tiejun, executive director of the China Rural Construction School at Southwest University. The notice raised concerns online about potential food shortages or even the possibility of war with Taiwan. However, the Chinese have shown themselves very receptive to technological innovation. Large digital ecosystems like Alibaba and Pinduoduo are now leveraging their infrastructure to connect millions of farmers with consumers and helping to digitize the system, potentially creating a leapfrog effect. Pinduoduo, a relatively young company, has made news with its extensive agtech investments, aiming to bring China’s agriculture sector up to the pace of other industries. This digitization process is still ongoing, but traceability and transparency tools are helping increase trust - plus pursue China’s long-term goal of driving sustainability in the agricultural sector. One key area where change is happening fast is in the food supply chain. How has innovation disrupted China’s distribution network? How have innovations in online retail played a role?
